Kenneth D. Thieneman

Kenneth D. Thieneman  [President]

As President/Owner of Thieneman Construction, Inc. and Co-Founder of Algaewheel Technologies LLC, I understand how the water and wastewater industry can be changed through innovative algae technology that is truly sustainable and environmentally friendly. My passion is based solely on the ability to provide clean water for a healthy environment. The increasing demand for clean water will be the single greatest challenge of mankind in the next century.

I have over 25 years experience in the water and wastewater industry, and I have performed most every job associated with the construction of a treatment plant including all field and office responsibilities. This provides me the empathy required to give me a connection to our company, and especially to our employees.

When I graduated from Purdue in 1987, I began my career working for Clearwater Constructors in Texas. During my three year tenure, I worked on a $50M waste water plant, a 10-story federal courthouse building, and a federal printing press project. My career in environmental construction continued for over ten years with Bowen Engineering where I was a vice-president in operations. My pursuits directed me to start Thieneman Construction in 1999 to be a self-performing environmental contractor that provides value engineering services. Thieneman Construction self-performs the site work, concrete construction, mechanical systems, and process equipment. I believe our relationship with the engineers, owners, subcontractors and vendors is the key to success in this industry. Our relationships are built through trust, hard work and integrity. I promote a company-wide dedication to self-performance and nurturing our in-house technical capabilities. Our employee ownership culture instills the commitment necessary for our professional development. I believe one's persistence provides the power to shape the future which is why our motto is Excellence is the Standard.

I am rewarded on a daily basis by the complexity of our projects and the accomplishments of our work force. It is an honor to lead Thieneman Construction as a family-based company committed to solving environmental challenges of today. I look forward to the future of the water and wastewater industry and how we will contribute to providing fresh water and treating wastewater for our communities throughout the world.

Todd Lemen  [Vice-President]

I have over 25 years of construction experience in the water, wastewater and power industries and have worked in construction from an entry level field engineer to senior vice president. My work experience includes project leadership and management, design build proposals and projects, design management, energy saving performance contracting, conceptual estimating, contract negotiations, business development and corporate purchasing. I have a unique technical ability to provide value and solutions to customers by analyzing difficult construction problems through constructability review, project pre-planning/scheduling and value engineering.

Employees of Thieneman Construction, have a passion for clean water and air, energy conservation and self-perform construction. This passion along with their “high energy” growing company atmosphere and core values is why I decided to join Thieneman Construction. It is refreshing to have the opportunity to grow within a family-friendly organization that is committed to their employees through company ownership, profit sharing, training and development. Construction is a “people” business (not just brick & mortar) and you must have a genuine concern for your clients, vendors, subcontractors and employees.

Vince Rock

Vince Rock  [Area Manager, Merrillville Office]

For the past twenty years , since graduating from Purdue University in Civil Engineering , I have been involved in design, construction and start up in power generation, iron, steel, commercial and government construction projects. I am responsible for the overall success of projects I manage while ensuring that each project meets the satisfaction of the client, and exceeds customer's objectives in the areas of cost, schedule, quality and safety.

Working at an early age with my father, a mechanical engineer, I learned the value of providing up front innovative cost saving ideas, conceptual design means and construction methods to bring each project to a win-win completion for all stakeholders. I have been applying these lessons learned in both public and private projects while at Thieneman Construction and recently several projects with the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers.

Being a good manager means leading by example and putting forth hard work, sound character and high ethical standards, all, which are the basis of principles at Thieneman Construction. These attributes, which characterize the culture here at Thieneman Construction, coupled with my passion for construction, has afforded me the opportunity to reach mutually successful outcomes on every project.

My wife Mila and I have been married for 19 years while raising three daughters. "I believe my involvement in their education and sports activities has taught me the value of balance between work and life that keeps me energized and excited about my profession and desire to work every day.

Success does not always come easy. It takes some skill, some luck and most importantly passion. But in the end, construction and the challenges that come with it just make it plain fun to me."

The enjoyment of working at Thieneman Construction comes from the satisfaction of seeing a project from the beginning to end predominately utilizing our own specialized work forces. The ability to control our skilled work force on sophisticated structures and complex operations systems allows Thieneman Construction to deliver an end product that our customers expect.

In my current capacity with Thieneman Construction, I am responsible for the overall success of the projects regardless of the size.

Having over 12 years of construction experience in various field and office management levels within water / wastewater treatment and delivery allows me to add a dynamic to the Thieneman team that our projects demand. These projects that take me back to my roots building bridges as a laborer and carpenter while obtaining degrees from the University of Indianapolis and Purdue University.

The experience of working for a full service competitive nature General Contractor that actively seeks complex projects with the intent of delivering an exceptional result is rewarding. At the end of each day, it is always enjoyable to share the successes of working in an environment that strives in safety, maintains an expectation on quality and knowing that Excellence is the Standard.

I have over 20 years of experience in construction with over 17 years focused on the Water and Waste Water industry. I have been involved in many types of design build and negotiated projects as well as public works projects. My projects have ranged in size and complexity from small $5,000 upgrades to $25-$30 million dollar new facilities and or renovations. I enjoy working with owners and clients from conceptual ideas through final project solutions. I understand that the key to every successful project is execution of every detail with the utmost urgency and integrity. The challenges of planning and executing multi-phase construction projects with large excavations and concrete placements, intricate equipment installations, time sensitive by-pass and start-up operations, keep me engaged and passionate with my Team from the initial planning to the final turnover with the owner. I take pride in not just what we accomplish – but how we develop and grow our people, and exceed our clients’ expectations along the way.

My experience in the wastewater industry began during college as an intern for a municipal contractor. I earned my bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and am a licensed Professional Engineer in Indiana. While my post graduate experience began at Thieneman Construction, I left for a short time to work for an engineering consulting firm where my tasks focused on the design of several wastewater treatment plants, sanitary collection sewers, storm water systems and dam rehabilitations. I returned to Thieneman Construction as a Project Engineer after receiving my Professional Engineer License.

Since returning to Thieneman Construction, I have worked on Algaewheel projects in Reynolds, Indiana (Biotown USA) and Hopewell, Virginia. I have also worked on a variety of wastewater projects in Indiana and Illinois utilizing different treatment technologies and construction methods.

I enjoy the team atmosphere of construction and the comradery of the project team. Every day is an opportunity for learning. I am constantly learning new things from the upper management who run the company and our skilled tradesmen that put our work in to place.

My wife, Angie, and our young son, Adler, help to keep me grounded in reality. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, attending Purdue sporting and alumni events, and chasing my golf ball around the golf course.

Starting out as a union carpenter, I always had dreams to advance my career to management within the construction industry. I was promoted to foreman, then superintendent and now enjoy the role of general superintendent for Thieneman Construction. I manage all field operations and equipment on all of our construction projects. Of my 32 years of field experience, 26 years have been in supervision.

Working for Thieneman Construction has given me a sense of pride knowing that a quality project with the highest standards will be delivered to the owner on time. Developing field employees and their skills to advance them to the next level in the construction industry is very rewarding to me.

I am proud to be on the Thieneman team. I enjoy the same goals as the company which is to look back on a finished product and say that we (Thieneman Construction, union members, design engineers and owners) have completed another successful project that makes us all proud.

Since starting in construction when I was young, I always felt the challenge and satisfaction of working on every project. In the 20 plus years of my construction experience, no matter what position I’ve held, I have always taken great pride in what I was building. The day to day operations of construction are a very rewarding career. I see the industry as building people and relationships. I have been very fortunate to work for some of the best companies in the industry and very fortunate for all they have taught me. While on my journey through the management stages of my career, I have always valued the “hands on” challenge. Since starting with Thieneman Construction, my role is more challenging and rewarding. I’m looking forward to building an exciting future with Thieneman Construction.

When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my Wife, Joni, of 10 years and my 3 daughters and 1 son.
